A Case Study of Our South Salt Lake Development

Ritz Classic

Since 1958, the 90-foot Ritz Classic bowling pin served as a place-maker for the city of South Salt Lake. In 2017, Think Architecture partnered with ICO Multi-Family Holdings to renovate the former bowling alley site, transforming it into a new mixed-use development, the Ritz Classic Apartments. Under the fluorescent light of the refurbished Ritz sign, our team designed the Ritz architecture plan as part of several long-proposed developments along the S-Line streetcar in the East Streetcar Neighborhood Zone.

Known as The Crossing, the mixed-use development included a new Winco Foods grocery store, the Zellerbach Apartments, and the S-Line Townhomes. Think’s architects collaborated with The Crossing partners to design a residential complex that lies at the heart of the development. Our hard work and creativity paid off. Now, Ritz Classic residents enjoy 4.11 acres, five stories, and 287 units of innovative mixed-use design

Refurbishing the Iconic Salt Lake City Ritz

Rather than discard the history of South Salt Lake City, our architects made it the main feature of our mixed-use development. Once part of the now-shuttered Ritz Classic bowling alley, at its historic home on the 2200 block of State Street, the reassembled iconic sign stands as a symbol of the neighborhood’s past and its future— the Ritz Classic Apartments.

At the 2200 South block of State Street, the Ritz Classic is a five-story complex with 287 residential units just south of the S-Line streetcar route in Salt Lake City. Under the glow of the refurbished sign, the Ritz Classic Apartments consists of four floors of wood-framed residential units above a ground floor parking podium with 314 parking stalls. The market-rate residential units include a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments with a few three-bedroom units. The interior residential units open to two central courtyards above the parking podium where residents can enjoy luxury amenities.

Ritz Classic amenities include:

  • Corner plaza connected to nearby transit
  • Elevated lap swimming pool
  • Outdoor common area including dining and kitchen facilities
  • Two hot tubs
  • Dog park
  • Pet salon
  • Conference rooms
  • Internet café
  • Sports lounge
  • Clubroom
  • Internal secured bicycle storage with maintenance stations
  • Dedicated parking for electric vehicles
