Shaping Impactful Design in Healthcare and Industrial Architecture
NH Rather, Associate Principal at Think Architecture, specializes in designing impactful healthcare and industrial spaces. With a focus on solving complex challenges and meeting client needs, NH has built a career driven by innovation and thoughtful design. His journey—shaped by global study experiences and early exposure to architecture—reflects a commitment to creating spaces that balance form and function.
From Inspiration to Expertise
NH’s fascination with architecture was sparked by visits to major cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City. Iconic landmarks, such as Griffith Park Observatory and Watts Towers, fueled his imagination and inspired him to explore how buildings shape urban environments. “Visiting Los Angeles and San Francisco as a kid made a huge impression on me. There was so much happening, and it really captured my imagination. I was struck by the way some of the buildings seemed to fit so well within the urban environment yet were interesting objects by themselves,” NH recalls.
This passion deepened after a high school trip to New York City, which solidified his desire to pursue architecture. Early in his career, opportunities with exceptional clients helped him recognize the unique potential of healthcare and industrial projects. At Think Architecture, NH combines technical expertise with innovative solutions to create spaces that meet client needs and exceed expectations.
Philosophy and Collaboration
NH’s early exposure to architecture, inspired by his father’s work as an architect, provided him with both creative inspiration and valuable business insights. He further broadened his perspective through studies in Ohio, Los Angeles, and internationally in Russia and Italy, where he explored diverse architectural styles. “I believe that good design comes through a deep
understanding of the purpose of the building. Listen to the client’s needs and how they explain the purpose and uses of the building. Then, use your creative design skills to not only functionally solve those needs but add beauty through form, materials, light, and color,” he explains.
Innovation and Balance
Among Salt Lake City’s landmarks, the Eccles Theater stands out to NH for its seamless integration with both Main Street and the Regent Street corridor. “The lobby is spectacular, and the theater itself provides comfort and beauty—not to mention, they added enough legroom for tall people like me!” he shares, reflecting his appreciation for its thoughtful design and functionality.
Outside of work, NH recharges through physical activity—mountain biking, snowboarding, and coaching youth sports. He also finds inspiration and clarity in nature, whether hiking trails or enjoying quiet outdoor spaces. These moments of reflection, he believes, play a key role in his creative problem-solving. When asked what he might do if he weren’t designing buildings, NH jokes that he’d be a surf instructor in Hawaii, a nod to his adventurous spirit and love of the outdoors.
Looking Ahead
As NH reflects on the future of architecture, he’s excited about the potential of artificial intelligence to transform the design process. He views AI as a powerful tool for streamlining iterations, sparking creativity, and addressing complex challenges. Surrounded by a talented and supportive team, NH’s work reflects his commitment to both innovation and building trust. Few things are more rewarding to him than hearing a client say, “It definitely turned out better than I had imagined.” Through his forward-thinking approach, NH shapes purposeful and transformative spaces that leave a lasting impact.
