Path to Architecture

Brandon’s journey into architecture began with a talent for drawing and math, combined with a love for history and geography. Guided by high school aptitude tests pointing him toward architecture, he pursued undergraduate studies at the University of Utah, followed by graduate studies at Georgia Tech, where he developed a passion for urban design. His post-graduate travel fellowship to Europe allowed him to explore historic urban spaces firsthand, deepening his appreciation for designs that foster a strong sense of place.

After graduate school, Brandon developed his portfolio across several U.S. locations, including Atlanta, Orlando, Seattle, and Portland. These experiences reinforced his commitment to creating community-centered environments that foster connection and enhance daily life.

Influences and Inspiration

Brandon’s dedication to urban design aligns closely with the “placemaking” movement, which aims to create spaces that foster a sense of community and belonging. A pivotal moment in his career came during a visit to Portland’s Pearl District. He recalls, “I remember seeing little kids playing in these new urban parks surrounded by old and cool new buildings, right adjacent to downtown. I thought that was something that you don’t see too much in urban areas.” This experience reinforced his appreciation for thoughtfully planned spaces that bring a neighborhood to life.

His work on projects like the Power District Masterplan, Granary District Masterplan, Deer Cove, Gravel Pit Masterplan, and several other Seattle-based masterplans further inspired his dedication to creating spaces that foster connection within urban environments.

When asked about his favorite buildings in northern Utah, Brandon highlights the Kem C. Gardner Transformation Center at Intermountain Healthcare’s Murray Campus, the Blue Sky Resort just northeast of Park City, and the Goldener Hirsch Residences in Deer Valley. Each reflects innovative design harmonizing with its materials, form, and surroundings—qualities central to Brandon’s architectural philosophy.

Outside of his work, Brandon continues to explore his passion for architecture by virtually visiting cities through Google Earth and collecting books on architects he admires, such as Tom Kundig and Brooks Scarpa. These architects inspire his approach to balancing innovative design with materials harmonizing with the surrounding landscape.

Client-Focused Design Philosophy

For Brandon, successful client partnerships are built on mutual respect and open communication. Reflecting on his work with the Power District Masterplan, he notes that rewarding projects often come from collaboration where both sides feel heard and respected. “It’s about finding that balance between the client’s ideas and the architectural vision,” he says, “which creates designs with lasting impact.”

Describing himself as focused on functionality and site-specific character, Brandon’s approach to design begins with understanding zoning requirements and client needs. His process flows through hand sketches and 3D models, enabling him to blend artistic inspiration with technical considerations. Recently, Brandon has begun using AI as a conceptual tool, saying it “helps generate some awesome imagery while in the design process.”

Shaping Utah’s Architectural Landscape

At Think Architecture, Brandon applies his experience to create spaces that reflect the character of their surroundings and foster a sense of community. Drawing on his background in urban design, he focuses on projects that enhance everyday life and support the growth of Utah’s communities.

With a strong foundation of experience across various cities, Brandon brings valuable insights to each project, focusing on how design can meet the needs of a connected, growing community. Through his work at Think Architecture, he remains dedicated to designing spaces that resonate with people and foster a lasting sense of place.
