Chris Jensen, AIA, first discovered architecture in high school, when a drafting class sparked an interest that grew into a lifelong career. Today, as a Principal Architect and the Chief Operating Officer at Think Architecture, he is known for blending technical precision with a collaborative spirit, helping clients and teams bring complex projects to life.
A Detail-Driven Approach
Chris naturally gravitated toward the technical side of architecture. He thrives on construction documents and making sure a design works as well on paper as it does in the field.
“I’ve always been a hands-on person. I’ve remodeled homes, built furniture, and even worked construction. This kind of experience seems to make for a better architect, building an understanding of how materials come together and how contractors think.”
Strength in Collaboration
Chris is quick to point out that architecture is never a solo pursuit. At Think, he values working alongside principals and associates who each bring different strengths to the table.
“We’ve got such talented people here, with each team member having a unique way of approaching design challenges. The best part is that we respect each other’s strengths, we lean on them, and that makes every project stronger.”
A Career Across Project Types
Over the years, Chris has worked on many project types, including hospitality, office, and multifamily developments. Yet residential work has always been a central focus because it connects directly to how people live every day.
“I’ve done everything from custom single-family homes to large-scale multifamily. I like that mix because it keeps you sharp and makes you a better architect.”
Building Client Partnerships
For him, the best work is defined by strong collaboration.
“The most successful projects happen when everyone is invested. We listen to their goals, they listen to our expertise, and together we create something that works.”
One career highlight was a 25,000-square-foot custom home in Provo. At the open house, the client told Chris they could not believe the house so perfectly reflected what they had envisioned. For him, it was a clear reminder that true partnership creates the best results.
The Changing Landscape of Salt Lake City
Born and raised in Utah, Chris has seen Salt Lake City evolve from what he describes as a more traditional design landscape into one defined by greater diversity of thought and design. Today, taller buildings, more urban housing, and mixed-use projects are reshaping the city, with a renewed energy around downtown living. As Salt Lake grows, Chris sees opportunities for Think Architecture to lead with local expertise while integrating fresh ideas that reflect the city’s changing needs.
Future of Architecture
Having started his career with hand drafting before moving into CAD and BIM, Chris knows how technology transforms the profession. He sees AI and immersive visualization as the next leap forward.
“I think we are headed toward virtual walkthroughs that let clients experience buildings before they are even built. Technology will only make collaboration and design stronger.”
That future also depends on the next generation of architects. “This is not a nine-to-five job. If you love it, give it everything you have; the profession will give back to you.”
Life Outside of Work
Away from work, Chris enjoys building, fishing, and exploring Utah’s mountains, along with woodworking, remodeling projects, and four-wheeling. His creative fuel? Classic rock.
“Sometimes the louder it is, the better,” he laughs. “It helps me focus when I am designing, and it is just fun.” And while music fuels his creativity, Chris has always known his true calling. He has known since a young age that he wanted to be an architect, a passion that continues today alongside his love of sports, especially cheering on Utah football.
